Happy The Lantern Festival

          One of the most important Chinese traditional festivals--- the Lantern Festival, falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar. 

          In China, people consider the Lantern festival as the end of the New Year festival. Therefore, people will celerbrate this meaningful day with lighting the lanterns and eat "Tang Yuan".

Tang Yuan  (Or "Yuan Xiao")     Tang Yuan is a traditional chinese food. Usually, it looks very like dumplings or buns if you are not fimiliar with Chinese culture. However, unlike dumpling and buns, Tang Yuan taste very sweet. It is usually covered with glutinous rice flour and contains semen sesami nigrum mixed with sugar inside.                                                                               It is always being translate as "sweet dumplings" in the western media. However,in some southern area of China, people eat salty "Tang Yuan" instead, even the earlies records showing that Tang Yuan should be sweet in Song dynasty.

The Lanterns

Appreciating the beautiful lanterns seems not popular in modern society during the Lantern festival. It is considered much more important in about 100 years ago during the Qing dynasty. This is also where the name of this festival came from. 

During 13th of the first month of the lunar canlendar, people will make beautiful lanterns and hang them out in the main street or outside of their house. In 15th, people will go out to appreciate the lanterns on the street with their family.
